It is worth noting that this study
used a random forest algorithm rather than a correlation study, which is different from other similar research methods we have seen before.
One of the most interesting points from this telemarketing list study is that direct traffic is a potentially major ranking factor – we’ve found that a lot of missing reference data tends to be organic searches, so trends tend to track organic search traffic. How this might affect the study is not directly stated but the statement, which the SEMRush team states,
"Hands down, this is probably the most controversial topic in our study." We were equally surprised when we saw the results of our analysis. Meanwhile, our algorithm was trained on a solid range of data, so we decided to double-check the facts. We excluded organic and paid search data, as well as social and referral traffic, and only considered direct traffic, and the results were roughly the same—the location distribution remained the same.
To us, this finding is very meaningful and demonstrates that Google prioritizes more power in its search quality assessment guidelines. "
